Wood Art Sculpture Carving Collage Artist
In creating handcut paper collage I do not begin with a “particular” idea, message, meaning, or opinion… nothing is preconceived, the final form is unknown until it is complete. My task as an artist is to FIND meaning, to uncover a vision, to point out an idea or something that may be true, to massage hundreds of collected handcut paper images into final forms that resonate with me.
Through humor, fear, hope, joy, despair, loss, insight, connection, isolation, communion, and especially the innumerable unnamable emotions and thoughts that make up the majority of who we are… the mysterious and unnamed, that which we know but do not or cannot label, that buoyant experience of the world before definition. The process is harnessed uncovering/revealing like an archeologist with brush and trowel at an excavation site or an oracle touring a lucid dream… there is no architect with a blueprint.
With collage the collected handcut images guide me towards the final form, the final form being the snapshot of a vision, in many cases a snapshot that reveals several different visions from varying perspectives yet part of the same world, snapshots requiring multiple interpretations… even though we do not always know what is going on, we do know something IS going on. The meaning and ideas found in the collages at times may be uncovered reflections of my own ideas, while other times they will not be mine. I set out to create a resonating vision, whatever that vision may be.
